Named for the celebration of spring that many Kurds observe, Newroz Market (393 Elysian Fields Ct., 615/333-0037) is a go-to shop for black tea, baklava, halal meats, and groceries. You’ll see locals heading straight to the back, to House of Shawarma, a sandwich counter with a small seating area inside the market. The chicken sandwich is a popular pick.

The shawarma, wrapped in fresh-baked bread, is the popular to-go item at Sulav International Market (4647 Nolensville Pike, 615/915-2557), which also stocks favorite imported ingredients and sells produce and halal meats.

Seven days a week, Azadi International Food Market and Bakery (391 Elysian Fields Ct., 615/315-0904) provides the community with fresh-baked bread pulled from the brick oven behind the shop. You can grab meat- or cheese-topped breads, sambusa (a samosa-like snack), or shawarma. The grocery has a popular halal butcher counter, too. The bread is baked all day, so there’s no rush to be there when the doors open.
